Simplicity Over Systems: Getting Back to What Matters on Your Route

When you first launch a pool service business, life is simple. It’s you, a truck, a test kit, and a list of accounts. You show up, clean the basket, balance the water, lock the gate, and move to the next yard.
As you grow, though, the creep begins. You add scheduling software, automated chemical tracking, tiered pricing sheets, fleet GPS, and layers of administration just to keep the wheels turning. Before you know it, you’re spending more time managing apps and spreadsheets than you are talking to your clients or actually looking at water.
Systems are necessary. You need to order chlorine and tabs in bulk, run payroll, bill customers on the first of the month, and keep your trucks maintained. Order and structure keep the business from going under.
But somewhere down the line, we forget why we built the business in the first place.
We start treating our customers like ticket numbers and our route techs (if we have them) like replaceable labor units. We get so wrapped up in the "busyness" of the operation that we miss the actual human beings right in front of us.
Take a step back from the dashboard metrics for a minute. Do you actually know what your long-term clients care about? Do you know what’s going on in their lives, or are you just a ghost who shows up on Tuesday, dips a wand, and leaves an invoice?
As St. Augustine said, “They won’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Your customers aren't loyal to your billing software; they’re loyal to you. They trust the guy who notices their dog passed away, asks how their kids are doing, or takes two extra minutes to explain why their spa heater is acting up instead of just slapping a massive quote on their door.
If you’re running a crew, the same rule applies. Your guys aren't just hands to scrub tile; they're men you're leading. If your only interaction with them is chewing them out over a missed skimmer basket or barking orders about time management, you’re missing the mark.
Let’s cut through the noise. Keep the systems you need to run an efficient business, but don’t let the administrative bloat crowd out the human element. Care about your people—your clients and your team—and let that genuine service drive your business forward.
Get back to simple.
